Creative participation

From 2011 to 2012

Creative Participation was a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of its Connected Communities programme in 2011-12. The project explored how three ‘pioneer communities’ in Newcastle, Cumbria and Bristol use creativity to involve themselves in place-making and planning practices after initial struggles to have a voice in the process. Co-producing legacy: What is the role of artists within Connected Communities projects?

This research project will explore how artists work within the AHRC Connected Communities programme. The programme has encouraged arts and humanities academics to work in different ways with communities to co-produce research across a range of disciplines. Creating cultural citizenship? Understanding the impact of participatory arts on community health and wellbeing

It is focused on arts and health, an emergent field that encompasses diverse art forms, genres and settings. Cultural Activism in the Community

This scoping study explored literature and debates on cultural activism and communities of place. Cultural activism is defined as a set of creative practices and activities which challenge dominant interpretations and constructions of the world, while presenting alternative socio-political and spatial imaginaries in ways which challenge relationships between art, politics, participation and spectatorship. Mapping cinema experience as living knowledge across Italy’s generational divide

Man Food: Exploring men’s opportunities for ‘becoming an ecological citizen’ through protein-related food practices

Current global trends in meat consumption are unsustainable, with large-scale livestock production carrying significant environmental costs – greenhouse gas emissions, land and water usage, and animal health and welfare concerns. Man Food is a project that brings together community partners with university researchers to explore questions around food and the environment, specifically in relation to men’s consumption practices. Participation’s “Others”: A Cartography of Creative Listening Practices

This project asks how participatory research might be extended to become better able to ‘listen’ to voices that do not fall within the boundaries of the traditional individual human subject, such as past and future generations, non-human life, radically decentred minds, and objects and technologies. Community music: history and current practice, its constructions of ‘community’, digital turns and future soundings

In the UK community music developed broadly from the 1960s and had a significant burgeoning period in the 1980s.
