Active citizenship, public engagement and the humanities: the Victorian model

Principal Investigator: Prof Eugenio Biagini (University of Cambridge)
Co-investigators: Dr Marcella Sutcliffe
Duration: 2012

This project sought to give historical perspective to contemporary debates surrounding the role of the humanities in civil society. The beginnings of the historical enquiry where located in the Victorian era, as it was then that the relationship between education and society was not only debated at length but also trialled through university men’s active engagement in innovative educational experiments. The Working Men’s College (London) provided a case-study for the purpose of the Scoping Study.
