Co-Curate NE responds to demand from schools and community groups within the North East to access and enhance knowledge from a broad range of museum collections and archives. Schools and community groups are often unable to access physical collections and archives because of distance or because demand for physical visits outstrips the capacity of the museum/archive. Co-Curate NE will develop digital access to address this challenge. It will open up ‘official’ museum/archive and ‘un-official’ co-created community-based collections and archives through innovative collaborative approaches using social media and open data. The type and range of access to materials will not be dictated, as is sometimes the case, by curators and academics; it will be identified by the communities themselves through carefully facilitated and supported collaboration, drawing on the multidisciplinary expertise of the project team.
