The Localism Act, 2011 gives communities the power to set up a Neighbourhood Forum and produce a Neighbourhood Plan for development in their area. Those Forums have relatively little resource to undertake these complex planning exercises. This project produced a smartphone app (‘MapLocal’) freely downloadable from Google Play, that gives communities a tool to gather information about their neighbourhood simply by walking around it. Photos, voice recordings and boundary marks can all be simply added to a central community map to help gather information that could inform a local planning exercise.
