Our Data Ourselves

Principal Investigator: Tobias Blanke
Co-investigators: Mark Cote
Duration: From 2013 to 2015

Our AHRC funded research project: ‘Our Data Ourselves’, will increase our understanding of the nature and role of the data that young people produce when they use social platforms and applications on their smartphones. We have paired with members of Young Rewired State. This independent global network of kids aged 18 and under, who have taught themselves to program computers, share their ideas with like-minded peers at events around the world, where they use freely available open data to make websites, apps and algorithms to solve real world challenges We will be working with a cross section of these young coders who are between the ages of 14 and 18. Together, we are developing tools and applications to capture and visualise key components of the Big Social Data (BSD) that this demographic generates. In short, we are interested in accessing the personal or social data that is generated primarily (though not exclusively) through their mobile devices, when they text, browse, post, and generate symbolic content.
